# Alternatives to Laverna for all platforms with any license

• ### Evernote

Evernote is a cross-platform, freemium app designed for note taking, organizing, and archiving. The app allows users to create a "note" which can be a piece...

• Unlike Laverna, Evernote isn't free or open source, it doesn't work natively on Linux and doesn't support decent encryption. It also places your (often very) private data in a searchable format into the hands of a corporation who've been hacked before and who must give data to authorities when asked. If none of these bother you, then Evernote is a replacement for Laverna. JohnFastmanDec 2016 • 51 agrees and 8 disagrees Disagree   Agree

• TagSpaces reads/saves files locally. You can sync those however you wish. It supports note taking (plain text and html), tagging (labels), text search, and works with many file formats. The basic version (which is v. good) is open source & free; advanced features cost a little. Not perfect, but excellent. JohnFastmanDec 2016 • 2 agrees and 1 disagrees Disagree   Agree

### Could end up great

Comment by ruskelljd

This software definately has potential to be great but great right now it is not. Right now it has sync problems and it doesn't seem like the developers are working on it. The web app works great but the computer based app have issues. I like it and I have some stuff in it but right now I don't feel that I can put my trust in it to put something that is important to me. A project like this could end up being awesome but on the other hand they could decide to abandon it tomorrow.

### Couldn't make it work

I downloaded, followed the installation instructions, but I could not make it connect to dropbox. It greyed out the connect button. Then I tried to create folders for notes. That action would not complete, either. Removing.

Possible concern when setting up storage is that I get this warning: "The old version of the Dropbox platform is being retired on September 28, 2017. The developer of this app has yet to acknowledge the change, so this app may not continue to work in the future."

But the dropbox storage feature is working as of Aug, 2017. (I'm using it with encryption enabled; storage is in json format with encrypted data in the json document in a predefined dropbox folder.)

Yes, it still works as of Aug 23, 2017. However, when September 28th rolls around, it won't work anymore with Dropbox. Well, unless there are code changes.
